If you are working on your computer, then usually a standard in means the keyboard. If it is an embedded system, then it may not be the keyboard. So, it may be a touchscreen, or it may be a keypad like that.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">By using scanf library function you can read both characters and numbers from the keyboard.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s explore how to use <strong>scanf<\/strong>. Look at the code snippet here, as shown in Figure 1. Here, whatever the user enters is usually the number. So, that is put into the address of the variable. What scanf does is, whatever the value you enter, it will be read from the input stream, and it will be saved at the address of the<\/span><b> age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> variable.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That&#8217;s the reason you have to mention the address operator here, so the address of age (&amp;age). &#8220;%d&#8221; is a format specifier.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">\u201c%d\u201d \u2192 scanf reads an integer(a number) which the user enters<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">&amp;age \u2192 scanf puts that read value &#8220;At the address of &#8221; &#8216;age&#8217; variable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now, I enter the number, let&#8217;s say 8. When I enter 8 from my keyboard, the number 8 is stored at the address of <\/span><b>age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not its ASCII equivalent. So, you have to remember that. Because I have used the format specifier <\/span><b>%d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, I want a number to be stored in the variable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose I use format specifier <\/span><b>%c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here, then its ASCII equivalent will be stored in variable <\/span><b>age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That is 56. That&#8217;s how you should differentiate. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What actually should be stored in the variable? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can decide that by using the format specifier.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to store a character.&nbsp; That means an ASCII value of the character into the variable. In this case, I use format specifier <\/span><b>%c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as shown in Figure 2. This is also used to read input from the standard in.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 22px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ba0471;\"><b>getchar()<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">If you just want to read a single character from the keyboard in ASCII format then just use getchar().&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">getchar() function takes no argument and just returns an int value which happens to be the ASCII value of the key pressed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">For example, int a = getchar(); \/\/Here the program hangs until you press a key from your keyboard followed by pressing the enter key.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">In the following article, we&#8217;ll do one exercise using scanf and other functions.
