Unary operators with pointer variables<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let&#8217;s begin by considering a scenario where a pointer variable is defined, initialized to the memory address 0xFFFF0000, and has the type <code>uint32_t*<\/code>, as illustrated in Figure 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Suppose our intention is to increment the value pointed to by <code>pAddress<\/code> by 1. The operation <strong><code>pAddress = pAddress + 1<\/code><\/strong> entails an arithmetic addition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">So, if I try to increment *<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><code>pAddress<\/code><\/strong><\/span> by 1, it gets incremented by 4. Because its type is <code>uint32_t*<\/code>. That&#8217;s why the final result will be 0xFFFF0004 in this case.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of doing this, you can also use the unary increment operator on the pointer variable like <strong><code>pAddress<\/code><\/strong><\/span><b>++<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you do this, then this also yields the same result. So, the final value of the <strong><code>pAddress<\/code><\/strong>will be the same value. It will not be 0xFFFF0001.
