It is shown in Figure 1.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A switch\/case statement is also used to take some decisions based on the expression evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 35px; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">How does the switch\/case work?<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">First, the expression will be evaluated, and after that, it is compared with several cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"color-2-text-contrast color2-background-color\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ccffcc;\">A switch case body is a collection of several <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><b>cases<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ccffcc;\"> and a <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><b>default<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ccffcc;\"> case. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the default statement is optional. Syntax<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Now let&#8217;s examine this switch\/case block.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"\" style=\"background-color: #114d82;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ffffff;\">Please note that <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><b>switch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>case<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> break, default<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ffffff;\"> are all reserved keywords of C standard.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">First, the expression will be evaluated in the switch statement. The body of the switch statement is shown in Figure 1. Inside the body of the switch statement, you can have many case statements or case blocks and a default block.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The expression is evaluated, and based on the final result of the expression, a case block will be executed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Case<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> label, and it must be an <\/span><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><b>integer value<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, remember. So, the <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>case<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must be followed by an <\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>integer value<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and after that, you have to write a <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>colon(:)<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, for that case, you can write as many numbers of statements. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And once all the statements are executed, you can break the switch statement by using a <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>break<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keyword.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When the break is executed, the control comes out of the switch body, and it continues with the rest of the code.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 25px; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; line-height: 35px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<pre class=\"color-5-text-contrast color5-background-color\" style=\"font-size: 12px; box-shadow: #cecece 0px 0px 0px 0px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\"><span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">int<\/span> main(<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">void<\/span>)\r\n\r\n{\r\n\r\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <span style=\"color: #008000;\">uint8_t<\/span> key_read = read_keypad();\r\n\r\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">switch<\/span>(key_read)\r\n      { \r\n\r\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"> &nbsp;case 1:<\/span>\r\n        all_leds_race();\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">        break;<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp; &nbsp; <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">&nbsp;case 2:<\/span>\r\n        all_leds_on();\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">        break;<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;case 3:<\/span>\r\n        all_leds_toggle();\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">        break;<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp; <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;case 4:<\/span>\r\n        all_leds_blink();\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">        break;<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"> default:<\/span>\r\n        all_leds_off();\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">        printf<\/span>(\"Invalid key! Please enter number between (1 to 4) only\\n\");\r\n\r\n}<\/pre>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Here is a program which reads a keypad, and based on the key_read, the decision will be taken. This read_keypad function returns the value of the key that the user has pressed. The user presses key 2, so read_keypad returns 2.&nbsp; 2 is stored in the key_read variable. And that key _read variable is used as an expression in the switch statement. So, the value of key_read is 2. That&#8217;s why the key_read&nbsp; value is compared with the values of the case statements. That&#8217;s why, in this case, if key_read is 2, then control directly comes to case 2. It doesn&#8217;t execute case 1, it directly goes to case 2.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case 2, it executes the statements of case 2. In this case all_leds_on() is a function call. Once this function is executed, the program encounters a <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>break<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, once a break is encountered, the control immediately breaks this switch statement body, and it moves out of the switch body and continues for the rest of the code of the program.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">So, if key_read is 2 and break is not present in case 2 statements, in that case, the switch body will not be broken. It continues with the case 3 statement and then finds a break. And once it finds a break, then it breaks the switch body and goes out of the switch body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Sometimes we use a break, and sometimes we don&#8217;t use a break, so that depends upon your logic. But not using a break statement is fine; that is not actually a compilation error. Carefully use the break that&#8217;s according to your logic, whether to use break or not to use a break.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the key_read value is 5, then none of these cases match, the control directly goes to the <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>default<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> case, and the statements in the default case will be executed. For a <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>default<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> case, you need not mention the <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>break<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> statement because it anyway comes at the end. So, you should always write the default case at the end, and it goes out of the switch body.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">You got the idea behind the switch\/case statement, and it will be more clear when we do one exercise.
