Syntax of the do..while loop<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">Remember that, the difference between a while loop and a do..while loop is,&nbsp; do..while loop statements are always executed first and then the expression will be checked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">do..while loop says, repeat the execution of code inside the \u201cdo\u201d body until the expression evaluates to false(0).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">The syntax of the do..while loop is shown in Figure 1. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"\" style=\"background-color: rgba(11, 34, 151, 0.9);\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ffff00;\">Please take note that, there is a semicolon at the end of the while(expression) and this semicolon is compulsory. Not giving a semicolon is a syntax mistake, so you&#8217;ll face a compilation error.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">It is very easy to understand. First, these statements will be executed, which is there inside the \u201cdo\u201d body, and then while(expression) will be evaluated. So, if this expression evaluation result is 0 (that is false), then the loop ends. That means control goes out of the body and continues with the rest of the code of the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">Suppose, if this expression evaluation is true, then control loops back once again to the \u201cdo\u201d body and it executes the statements once again. Like that. So, statements will be executed again and again until this expression becomes false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">The key difference between a do-while loop and other loops such as &#8220;while&#8221; or &#8220;for&#8221; loops is that the do-while loop is guaranteed to execute at least once, whereas the other loops may not execute at all if the condition is false from the start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 25px; line-height: 45px; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #db3814;\"><b>Flowchart of the do..while loop<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12107\" style=\"width: 294px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12107 \" src=\"http:\/\/fastbitlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure-2-1.png\" alt=\"Figure 2. If the expression is false, then the program continues with the code outside the loop body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">These are the points you should always remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">Statements are executed first.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">Expression is evaluated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">If the expression evaluation result is true, execution loops back and the statements inside the \u201cdo\u201d body executes again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">If the expression evaluation result is false, while statement is terminated and program continues with the statement next to while statement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">Statements are executed at least once.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">That&#8217;s about the do..while loop.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">And what you should note here is that statements are executed at least once. That&#8217;s the difference between a while loop and a do..while loop. In do..while loop, statements are executed at least once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 30px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #993366;\"><strong>When to Use a &#8220;do-while&#8221; Loop:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">do..while loop is rarely used while looping, because, we can always replace do..while loop with while loop or for loop. But, sometimes it is used. It is not like you know it is never used, but it is always encouraged to use do..while loop if it is necessary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">In embedded programming, we use do..while loop to write multiline \u2018C\u2019 macros in a header file. More on this, we will learn when we explore<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> <a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/fastbitlab.com\/microcontroller-embedded-c-programming-lecture-181-pre-processor-directives-in-c\/\">\u2018C\u2019 pre-processor directives<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em; border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000080;\">In that case, I will show you how you can write a function like macros and multiline macros using do..while loop. In embedded system programming,&nbsp; you see do..while loop most of the time in header files, and we&#8217;ll discuss that when we reach there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.8em;
