When the transistor is OFF, the drain of the transistor will be floating or open. That\u2019s the reason it is called an open drain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px; font-family: Roboto; font-weight: 400;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, an open-drain configuration can only pull-down the pin, but it lacks pulling up capability. Open-drain configuration has two states, either ground or floats. Most applications that utilize open-drain circuitry utilize external pull-ups on open-drain outputs.
