It\u2019s usually expressed in units of bits-per-second (bps). If you invert the baud rate, you can find out how long it takes to transmit a single bit. This value determines how long the transmitter holds a serial line in either a high or low state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span>Example<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Look at the diagram in Figure 1. Example for baud rate discussion.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this scenario, the baud rate is set at 9600 bps, signifying that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">1 bit duration = 1\/9600 = 104 microseconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 0px; font-family: 'Roboto Slab'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 17px; line-height: 30px;\" data-font-family=\"Roboto Slab\" data-font-weight=\"400\" data-font-style=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Therefore, each bit, including the start bit, occupies a duration of 104 microseconds. In this case, to transmit four bit data segment, 416 microseconds are needed. The only requirement is that both transmitting as well as receiving devices should operate at the same rate. But there are limits to how fast the data can be transferred. The baud rates are usually depending upon the peripheral clock frequency of the UART peripheral.
